Schistosomiasis is a typical Neglected Tropical Disease with big numbers of people who are infected and/or at risk and big DALYs. >200 million people are infected and DALYs exceed 5 million. It used to be a disease of poor prognosis but with now Praziquantel is used for safe deworming. Prophylaxis is difficult under the insufficient infrastructure especially with the question of availability of safe water. Social development often leads to expansion of endemic areas.
To the question why new drugs are needed. The answers are vaccine development is far from the practical use. Praziquantel is the only one and the last line drug for schistosomiasis.
